You as an author are often faced with very high fees for individual publications. With this in mind, the University of Bonn has signed agreements / contracts with various publishers and organizations that allow you to publish for free on an open-access basis or give you discounts on your publication fees (APCs). In so doing, we are supporting the ongoing transformation toward open access. Take a look at what we can offer in terms of covering the costs for the following publishers and organizations.

Free Open Access Publishing in CUP's Gold and Hybrid Journals

As part of a DFG-funded consortium, the University of Bonn has entered into an agreement with the publisher Cambridge University Press. This allows authors from the University of Bonn to publish their articles in many of the publisher's journals as Open Access. Here you will find a list of the relevant journals from the publisher.

How to use the agreement:

  • Please indicate in the publication agreement that you wish to publish Open Access.
  • In the later process, specify the University of Bonn as your institution.
  • For more information and a detailed description of the publication workflow, please refer to the publisher's step-by-step guide.

Free Open Access Publishing in Gold Journals

Copernicus specializes in journals in the fields of geosciences, engineering and life sciences. Up to an Open Access publication fee of €2,000 gross, corresponding authors from the University of Bonn can publish in the Gold Open Access journals of Copernicus without personal cost under the CC BY license.

Higher publication fees are not included in the contract at this time. Authors must cover these costs themselves. In such cases, partial funding from our publication fund may be available.

How to use the agreement:

  • Members of the University of Bonn submit their manuscript as the "corresponding author" in the usual way, indicating the University of Bonn as their primary affiliation to the publisher.
  • Verification is done by the publisher.

Free or Discounted Open Access Publishing

The University of Bonn has entered into an Open Access transformation agreement with De Gruyter. Authors from the institution can publish articles Open Access under the following conditions:

  • In hybrid journals in the humanities and social sciences, publishing is free for authors. The Open Access publication fees (APCs) are covered by the University of Bonn upon approval.
  • In pure Open Access journals, authors receive a 20% discount on the Open Access publication fee (APC). Funding from the publication fund for articles from the University of Bonn can be applied for these costs.
  • For articles with multiple authors, the person who is the point of contact with the publisher is considered the eligible author. This is the person who signs the publication agreement ("corresponding author"). Besides research articles, other types of articles like book reviews are also covered by the agreement.

  • In hybrid journals in the humanities, social sciences, and economics, publishing is free for authors. The Open Access publication fees (APCs) are covered by the University of Bonn upon approval.
  • In pure Open Access journals, authors receive a 20% discount on the Open Access publication fee (APC). Funding from the publication fund for articles from the University of Bonn can be applied for these costs.

Open Access Publishing under the DEAL Framework

The University of Bonn participates in a contract with the publisher Elsevier. Authors from the University of Bonn with the status of "submitting corresponding author" can publish Open Access in more than 2,500 Elsevier journals, including journals from the Cell Press and The Lancet brands.

Additionally, the University of Bonn gains access rights to nearly the entire Elsevier journal portfolio.

How to use the agreement:

  1. Log into the authors' portal of Elsevier. Submit your article. Enter "University of Bonn" or "University Hospital Bonn" as your affiliation (also on the PDF of your article, see also the guidelines of the University of Bonn for the standardized indication of affiliation in scientific publications)

  2. Whenever possible, use your institutional email address (@uni-bonn.de or @ukbonn.de) for correspondence and in the publisher's submission platform as the "submitting corresponding author."

  3. You will be notified that your institution is a signatory to an agreement with the publisher. You can now make your article open access free of charge.

  4. We check all articles for eligibility and the affiliation to the University of Bonn is confirmed or rejected by us as an institution.

  5. If you qualify, your publication fees will be billed to us, so you should not receive an invoice for any APCs yourself.

Free or Discounted Open Access Publishing

Hogrefe is a specialist publisher for psychology, psychotherapy, and psychiatry. The University of Bonn licenses the journal package PsyJournals from the publisher. Due to participation in this license, members of the University of Bonn can publish Open Access for free in all hybrid journals of the publisher.

How to use the agreement:

  • After successfully submitting your article as the corresponding author, you will be informed by the publisher about the possibility of publishing Open Access.
  • Confirmation of membership and cost coverage for your publication will then be automatically provided through your institutional email address from the University of Bonn or the UKB.

Free Publishing in an Open Access Publisher

The University of Bonn has entered into an agreement with the publisher PLOS. Authors ("corresponding authors") from the University of Bonn have the opportunity to publish their articles in Open Access at no cost in the 14 journals of the publisher.

PLOS is an Open Access publisher that publishes Open Access journals in the natural and life sciences, as well as related fields. In addition to subject-specific journals like PLOS Biology and PLOS Medicine, PLOS also publishes the international, multidisciplinary journal PLOS ONE.

How to use the agreement:

  1. Please use your institutional email address with the domain @uni-bonn.de or @ukbonn.de for submission.
  2. If you have an ORCID, please provide it.
  3. Select your institution from the drop-down menu.
  4. During the payment process, choose: "My institution will pay all or part of the fee."

We cover all costs. If you receive an invoice after the article has been accepted, there was an error in the submission process. Please contact us in that case.

Open Access Publishing under the DEAL Framework

The University of Bonn participates in a contract with the publisher Springer Nature. Authors from the University of Bonn with the status of "submitting corresponding author" can publish Open Access in more than 2,000 Springer Nature journals (Open Choice Option).

Publication fees for publications in Open Access journals of the brands SpringerOpen and BioMed Central (over 500 titles) are discounted by 20%, and price increases for APCs are contractually limited.

Additionally, the University of Bonn gains access rights to nearly the entire Springer Nature journal portfolio.

How to use the agreement:

  1. Log into the authors' portal of Springer Nature. Submit your article. Enter "University of Bonn" or "University Hospital Bonn" as your affiliation (also on the PDF of your article, see also the guidelines of the University of Bonn for the standardized indication of affiliation in scientific publications)
  2. Whenever possible, use your institutional email address (@uni-bonn.de or @ukbonn.de) for correspondence and in the publisher's submission platform as the "submitting corresponding author."

Open Access Publishing under the DEAL Framework

The University of Bonn participates in a contract with the publisher Wiley. Authors from the University of Bonn with the status of "submitting corresponding author" can publish Open Access in more than 1,300 Wiley journals (Hybrid Open Access Option). Publication fees for publications in Wiley Open Access journals (over 600 titles) are discounted by 20%.

Additionally, the University of Bonn gains access rights to nearly the entire journal portfolio on the Wiley Online Library platform.

How to use the agreement:

  1. Log into the authors' portal of Wiley. Submit your article. Enter "University of Bonn" or "University Hospital Bonn" as your affiliation (also on the PDF of your article, see also the guidelines of the University of Bonn for the standardized indication of affiliation in scientific publications)
  2. Whenever possible, use your institutional email address (@uni-bonn.de or @ukbonn.de) for correspondence and in the publisher's submission platform as the "submitting corresponding author."

This model was successfully implemented from 2021 to 2023 for a total of 72 titles in German Linguistics, German Literary Studies, and History (since 2022).

The Millennium Studies series is one of the central publication venues in the classical studies program of De Gruyter. The University of Bonn is participating in the transformation of this series to Open Access. Here you can find more information about the transformation initiative.

Both the backlist of the series (2004–2020) and the publications from 2021 and 2022 are freely available. Thanks to the support of 36 academic libraries (as of February 2023), new publications in the series can continue to appear in Open Access. There are no publication costs for the authors.

The University of Bonn is participating in an Open Access initiative by the Specialised Information Service (SIS) Fachinformationsdienst - FID for Education Sciences and Educational Research.

In 2024, another 20 books will be published. The titles are selected by a subject-specific committee.

OLH is a non-profit organization dedicated to open access without publication fees. It is funded through an international consortium consisting mainly of libraries and universities. The OLH publication platform hosts journals in humanities and social science disciplines and operates its own multidisciplinary journal. All articles undergo thorough peer review.

wbv is a publishing house with program focuses in the humanities and social sciences, education, as well as administration and law. The University of Bonn supports the transformation initiative "wbv Open Library Vocational and Business Education".

Members of the University of Bonn have free access to selected new releases (e-books) in the sub-disciplines of adult education as well as vocational and business education from the publisher. The publication fees for authors amount to one-third of the publication costs.
